WUKA period pants – review

I’ve been using WUKA period pants since April 2020 so thought it was time to share an honest review of my thoughts.

At the start of the year as a family we’d decided to try to be more conscious with the products we buy, what we throw away and how we can try to make a small difference to the reduce, reuse recycle movement.

In January, we completely stopped buying bottled water and in February I switched to reusable cotton makeup remover pads.

Since having Elsie my periods have changed, they are more regular but also are heavier and shorter in length.

I’d been thinking of trying period pants before I fell pregnant and when I saw that WUKA had a special Earth Day offer in April, I decided to finally take the plunge and use working from home as the perfect opportunity to really give these a chance.

I initially ordered two pairs of the WUKA heavy flow to see how I got on.

My first period using WUKA period pants

On the first day of my period which is very heavy flow now, I popped on the WUKA period pants.

I like the black fabric, sporty mesh and androgynous design of these period pants.

They are very padded and at first I felt like I was wearing a nappy (diaper for American readers) but they were comfortable.

WUKA stands for “wake up, kick ass” which is a sentiment I can totally get behind.

And if anyone dared to kick your bum with these pants on, you would be well protected by the (very) generous padding.

Steve was concerned that I would leak but I wore them for a full work day, the website says they can last up to eight hours, and I had no leaks.

However, that night I switched to a usual heavy flow nighttime sanitary pad and I did have a leak through to my pyjama bottoms which I was not happy about.

So the next night, I decided to really test the WUKA period pants and wore them for bed.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I slept well, they didn’t dig in and most importantly no leaks – even after a full night of sleep and I roll about quite a bit too.

And when it came to washing them. I followed the care instructions and washed them in the washing machine on a 40 degree wash minus the conditioner.

I put them in a drawstring wash bag on a 40 degree wash. No fabric softener. Just Fairy bio gel.

You are warned on the website and in the little card that comes with your delivery, that they are extremely absorbent and as such they do take a little while to dry.

During the warmer months I dried them on the washing line outside and that was fine. However, if it rained or I washed them later at night I found they took a couple of days to dry naturally inside, so something to think about.

Using WUKA period pants solely during a period

Initially, I used the two pairs of WUKA heavy flow period pants alongside sanitary pads and tampons and then I decided to order some additional pairs to see if I could have an entire period just using period pants to ditch the waste.

I ordered a WUKA cycle set which included three pairs of heavy flow pants and then when another special offer was on I ordered three pairs of medium flow pants.

The medium flow WUKA pants are different in design, they aren’t as padded (naturally) and I really like how they look and feel when they are on.

I feel like a few months on I’ve got the confidence and knowledge to be able to wear WUKA period pants solely during a period and not use tampons or sanitary pads.

However, sometimes my period tries to catch me out, lulling me into a false sense of security that it’s finished or it isn’t about to start; so I either waste a pair of period pants and nothing happens or I forgo and end up ruining my normal underwear.

Using WUKA Reusable pad at the start and end of my period, and my WUKA period pants is fantastic as it definitely saves me money, tampons and pads are expensive and not eco-friendly.

Also, this is so much better for the environment as I’m not throwing away products and packaging like I used to every month.

My overall thoughts on WUKA period pants

I like the design of the WUKA period pants.

They are comfortable to wear and I haven’t had any leaks.

You also have a choice of colour too, I just stick with black.

However, I do find if I’m having a particularly heavy day that there can be a slight odour towards the end of the day. I’ve noticed it but when I’ve questioned Steve he hasn’t.

WUKA period pants are extremely absorbent whether the heavy or medium flow, so you must bear that in mind when it comes to washing and drying them.

Before I invested in the additional pants and I only had a few pairs, I would’ve struggled to get them washed and dried during a single period, especially if I was drying inside the house.

During the colder, wetter months I hang them on small sock airer near a radiator and they dry within a day or so.

I would definitely recommend WUKA period pants, try one or two pairs to begin with and then build up your collection.

You could even mix and match alongside traditional tampons and pads and then perhaps move to cloth pads too.
