An open letter to my husband on his 40th birthday
Today my handsome husband is celebrating his 40th birthday so I thought I’d share an open letter to mark this momentous occasion.
My Stevie,
I know a lot of people freak out when they turn 40 but I’m so glad that you’re not and that you’re taking it in your stride.
But I do wish your stride wasn’t quite so big as I have to practically run to walk alongside you.
You’re definitely ageing like a fine wine and keep getting better looking with age (it’s a man thing I’m sure)!
I also think your approach to life in general has changed – you tend to be more mellow than when we first met and more practical and positive.
I’m often guilty of taking you for granted so I thought that today I would celebrate you and the many gifts you offer.
Support
You have and always will be my biggest fan and supporter.
You have continuously pushed me to succeed in the almost ten years that we’ve been together whether that is helping me with my portfolio to pass my senior journalism qualifications, prepping for my many job interviews or being extremely hands-on when it came to supporting my breastfeeding journey.
You always have been and still are my biggest cheerleader.
And the support you give to our daughter, to friends and to your work colleagues is phenomenal.
I think your team are really luck to have you as their manager.
Fatherhood
I knew very early on in our relationship that you would be an amazing father and you definitely are!
Seeing how much you adored our niece Amelia and the lovely relationship you have gave me a tiny insight into the type of dad you would one day be.
As soon as we found out we were pregnant you started taking your daddy duties very seriously buying a giant book to start your research, making sure I was eating and drinking well, coming to almost every single appointment and building all the various baby furniture that we needed yourself.
You have so much more patience than I do which I envy!
Elsie absolutely adores her daddy and is 100 per cent a daddy’s girl, I do occasionally get a look in now which is nice.
You are such a hands-on dad and I know we are both so lucky to have you.
You make even the smallest things fun for Elsie, you worry about her, you are fun time Frankie but you’re also a big cheerleader for her too and can put your foot down.
Laughter
Your laugh is contagious and you make Elsie and I laugh every single day.
You make fun of me (all the time) and you’re always making Elsie properly belly laugh with your silliness.
Your ability to make me laugh and not take myself too seriously is part of the reason I fell in love with you so many years ago.
You’re a kid at heart, and that’s what makes you so lovable.
Hard-work
Your work ethic is unrivalled.
When we first met you were pretty much working yourself so hard and making yourself ill because you were so dedicated to your team and to the newspapers and it took a toll on you.
So when you decided enough was enough I’ll admit I was relieved and thought you were incredibly brave to leave a career that you’d carved out to take a leap into something new.
You left a 15-year career and your family and friends to move 250+ miles away to relocate with me to my beloved native North East, to start a new chapter of our married life.
You’ve changed your career and moved your entire life around which is pretty amazing I think!
You still work hard of course but I think you are getting better at trying to have a work life balance but given the nature of what we do it’s hard to switch off especially when working from home.
Husband
We have definitely had some ups and downs and becoming parents really tested our marriage I think we’d both admit.
However, we’ve moved house a few times, re-located to my beloved North East and changed our careers and of course became parents and I think we’re all the stronger for the challenges we have faced together.
Through thick and thin, your loyalty, love and support is evident.
You are an incredible husband and father and I know I often don’t give you enough credit or I’m possibly too quick to criticise but I really do appreciate and love you and all that you do for our family.
My wishes for you
I hope that the “good days” far outnumber any other kind of day you have.
I hope that you never stop laughing or making us laugh too!
I pray that you recognise and feel the amount of love that surrounds you each day.
I hope that you remain to be a kid at heart and never “grow up”
I hope that you truly know how much I (and Elsie) appreciate all that you do for us each and every day.
I hope that you embrace 40 with open arms the best is yet to come my love.
