Sunday lunch at The Anchor Inn Whittonstall – review

We recently enjoyed Sunday lunch at the Anchor Inn Whittonstall so thought I’d share an honest review.

The Anchor Inn had been on my to dine in list for a while and I was really hoping we’d enjoy our visit.

The Anchor Inn Whittonstall restaurant retains many original features, bare stone walls, beams and vaulted ceiling and is the perfect spot for a family gathering or freshly cooked relaxed meal.

The bar hosts a cosy log-burner and well stocked bar.

The function room has a pool table, dart board and large screen TV, and a meeting room for business, clubs or any other function you may require.

There’s ample free parking at the rear of the pub, make sure to log your registration into the tablet once you enter otherwise you will receive a penalty notice in the post.

There’s plenty of signs displayed in the car park and inside to remind you and it’s very easy to do.

Once inside we were warmly welcomed and taken over to our table.

Dogs are welcome and we saw a few with families nearer to the bar area being very well behaved.

Separating the bar area from the main dining area is the impressive pie menu on boards.

The Anchor Inn has a really lovely vibe and stunning rural landscape views out of the windows.

We ordered soft drinks as usual and perused the Sunday lunch menu which was a special menu for Mother’s Day.

The menu really does have something for everyone even on a Sunday.

There’s the usual roast offerings of pork, chicken, beef, or leg of lamb as well as beer battered haddock, scampi, gammon steak, sausage and mash, a huge selection of pies, vegetable or beef lasagna, burgers and more.

I also thought the children’s menu is really good too and you can have one two or three courses which isn’t always an option.

For starters Steve had pate and toast and I had the prawn cocktail soft taco and we brought some breadsticks for Elsie to munch on and she had some of Steve’s toast.

And for mains I opted for a roast beef dinner and after much deliberation Steve plumped for the pheasant bacon and cranberry pie.

They were really accommodating and changed Elsie’s mash for chips for her meal and brought her a Yorkshire pudding too.

We didn’t have long to wait and our starters were soon whisked out.

My prawns were lovely but I would have liked a few more.

Steve really enjoyed his pate and toast.

And after a short wait our mains were soon brought over.

Elsie really enjoyed the sausages and having her own little pot of tomato ketchup to dip her chips into.

I had one of her chips and they were really good, proper homemade chips!

The portions are really generous at The Anchor Inn and we were not disappointed.

Steve’s pie was huge with his own accompanying jug of delicious gravy and we shared a side of crunchy vegetables between us.

I had plenty of slices of perfectly tender and juicy beef.

The roast potatoes were really great and the mash was perfectly smooth and creamy.

The gravy really is worth another mention it is absolutely delicious, served hot and the perfect consistency for me.

We were absolutely stuffed and didn’t leave a morsel of food on our plates and decided not to have a dessert on this occasion.

However, a couple of weeks later we returned with Steve’s parents for Sunday lunch and I couldn’t resist the profiteroles which were absolutely delicious – I highly recommend them!
