10 tips to stay warm at home this winter
With the temperature dropping below zero for most us in the UK, now is the time to start thinking of ways you can keep warm and well at home this winter.
Cold homes are a bigger killer across the UK than road accidents, alcohol or drug use.
Now I’ve started helping fight fuel poverty thanks to energy awareness training I’d like to share some pearls of wisdom.
Here’s 10 tips to stay warm at home this winter
- Wrap up well with several thin layers rather than one thick layer. When sitting for longer periods cover yourself with a blanket.

- Keep your main living room at 18–21°C (64–70°F) and the rest of your house at 16°C (61°F) at least. If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep. If you have thermostatic valves at the top or bottom of your radiators use them to turn up or down the temperature in the room.

- Close internal doors and use a keyhole cover to block draughts. Use draught excluders to help keep draughts at bay.
- Have regular hot drinks and food such as porridge, soups and stews. Make sure your cupboards are stocked up in case the weather turns particularly nasty.

- Keep as active as possible to boost your circulation. Move around at least once an hour and avoid sitting still for long periods. Even light exercise will help keep you warm. When you do sit down, put your feet up as it’s coldest nearest the ground.
- Draw curtains at dusk to help keep the heat in. Buy thermal linings or thicker curtains to also help keep the heat in.

- Keep bedroom windows closed and draft free – especially overnight.
- Cover any bare floors with rugs this winter as you’d be surprised at how much heat is lost through floors.
- If you have a radiator—especially one mounted on an outside-facing wall—you’re probably losing a lot of heat. Line the space between the wall and the radiator with heavy duty tin foil to keep the heat where you want it.

- Don’t miss out on benefits. Depending on your circumstances you may get the Winter Fuel or Cold Weather Payments automatically. If you don’t, visit uk/winter-fuel-payment or call 03459 15 15 15 to see if you’re eligible.

These are some wonderful tips, Rachel. I know how cold it can get in some parts of the country out there. Living in a tropical climate affords us some comfort that way. I liked your image for the one about tea 😀
Thank you so much 😊 we’ve already had some snow and it’s been -11 in some areas of the North East.
A little bit jealous as we have yet to get our first big snow this year. But thanks for the tips to stay warm when it comes!
Thank you 😊
Great tips. I never thought about putting tinfoil behind the radiators. One of my favorite tips is to wear a hat. I always wear a winter hat indoors and keep a sweater handy.
Hats are fabulous for keeping the heat in great tip 👍🏻
It has been particularly cold these last few days. I like to keep a blanket handy on the settee for when it gets really cold. 🙂
Me too always have a blanket on the back of the sofa and end of the bed just in case!
Your title drew me in as I am always cold in the winter! If I’m not cleaning the house, doing dish, or staying active – I’m cold. Thanks for all the tips.
Hope they can help! Thanks for reading and commented 🙂
This is a really good list of things to help keep you warm! When I was growing up my mom used to tell us to keep our socks on to stay warm – just like heat is lost through the floor our body heat is lost through our feet!
Great advice too 😊

To avoid hypothermia, especially in the very young or very old who move about less than most… keep temperature at a minimum of 21 as recomended by the national health.
Great post super advice.
Yes Louise you’re right the guidance says minimum of 18-21 degrees but what feels comfortable for individuals. Thanks for stopping by 😊
Great tips! I would never have thought to put tin foil behind the radiators! Going to try this as a lot of our radiators are on the outside wall!

It really does make a difference. I hope these help in your student home 😊
Wonderful advice! The temperature has dramatically dropped the last couple of days so its difficult to keep warm! I will try your radiator idea.
It really has dropped. Glad you found it useful I hope the radiator trick works for you.
I think having hot foods/warm meals makes a big difference. I was having salads for a while in winter and it just made me freezing.
