5 exercise routines for pregnant mums
We all know that doing exercise during pregnancy is good for you. Brisk walking, swimming, or muscle-strengthening exercises such as Pilates or yoga will help you in the run-up to giving birth and may also make delivering the baby easier.
It can boost your mood, reduce fatigue and help you to sleep at night. What is not to like?
If you are fitting in a holiday before the baby arrives, you might want to try and do some more exercise while you’re away (especially if you have access to a pool!)
Here are some of the best five exercise routines for pregnant mums. Check with your
midwife or doctor before starting any new activities and make sure you drink enough water to stay hydrated.
1. Swimming
Swimming is one of the best exercises you can do at any stage of your pregnancy. Being in the water feels brilliant when you are carrying extra weight.
The water takes the load off your back and carries the weight of the baby. It can also help to reduce swollen ankles. Just be careful walking on slippery floors.
Swimming can be one of the most comfortable ways to exercise during this time, so why not give it a go?

2. Yoga
You may wonder if it’s safe to carry on practising yoga while being pregnant – the answer is yes.
If you go to a regular class, be sure to tell your yoga teacher that you are pregnant.
They may adjust your routine to allow for more gentle style exercises.
As you progress through the trimesters you may want to avoid doing any poses that require twisting along the midline.
Practising yoga focuses on mental and physical well-being and this along with the
breathing exercises may also help you to deliver your baby.
Some say doing yoga during pregnancy may even mean you need less pain-relief during your baby’s birth.

3. Pilates
Practising Pilates is another great exercise to do when you are pregnant. It strengthens your tummy, back and pelvic floor muscles.
Some of the exercises may need to be adapted as you get closer to your due date. Check with your instructor or find a Pilates class for pregnant women.

4. Brisk walking
Going for a brisk walk is a great exercise for mums to be and can work out your heart and lungs. It is safe for all stages of pregnancy.
Aim for 30 minutes of walking three to five times a week. It can be a brilliant way to start if you are not used to doing much exercise and you can carry on walking right up to your delivery date.
Try going for a walk with a friend or family member to try and encourage you to walk a bit further.

5. Kegels/pelvic floors
You can do Kegel exercises anytime and anywhere without anyone knowing. Kegels
strengthen the muscles that hold up the uterus and bladder which helps with labour and
delivery.
To do them, squeeze the pelvic muscles as if you’re trying to stop yourself from
going to the toilet. Hold for five seconds and relax. Repeat as many times as you can
manage throughout the day.
Working your Kegels won’t help you to look better but they will help with the growing weight of your baby and to prevent you from leaking urine after childbirth.
