My overall thoughts on The Assistant
Cathryn Grant has done it again – an exciting, fast paced thrilling read that just kept me hooked from the get go.
Although the characters are not likeable at all, this is a very interesting, fast paced plot which makes it an enjoyable read.
It’s unsettling to watch someone’s mental state fundamentally unravel without them even noticing.
The Assistant is centred around two main characters – Vanessa – PA to Hank and Laura who strives to climb the corporate ladder.
Vanessa and Laura are having completely different experiences of the same events and it’s driving them down paths that could shatter both of their lives.
From the very beginning of the story you know that one of them is going to go over the edge but it’s not clear which of them it will be.
The book is almost split into two – detailing Vanessa’s relationship with her fiancé and her boss, her hidden secret and the odd dynamic between herself and Laura.
It also delves into Laura’s traumatic past and her mental state and moral compass unravelling which culminates in a really good twist towards the end of the story.
Another thrilling read, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

What sold me is the detail that the two characters were “having completely different experiences of the same events.” It’s interesting in life how we all have different perceptions of the same event. Great review, it’s on my list!
