Rustic Afternoon Tea at St Mary’s Inn review (AD)
I’m a big foodie and when I was invited to try out the new Rustic Afternoon Tea at St Mary’s Inn I was really excited.*
It’s been a while since my dad and I had some daddy daughter time so I asked my dad to join me.
Our last daddy daughter date was back in September when we went to watch Some Guys Have all the Luck a Rod Stewart tribute act. You can read our review here.
As he doesn’t work Friday’s and I had a flexi day we booked ourselves in last Friday.
From my parents house in Newcastle it took just over 20 minutes to drive to St Mary’s Inn.
It’s gorgeous country pub and B&B and is a sister property to the prestigious Jesmond Dene House so I knew we’d be in for a treat.
Before we settled down for our tasty treats we were given a tour of the impressive venue by the lovely Sarah.
It was great to see they had alcohol-free cider and beer as the usual designated driver as well a very well stocked bar.
To the right of the main bar there are various rooms for drinking, dining and socialising.
It has a real cosy feel with almost all rooms having a real log fire and lots of local art adding to the charm.
The private dining room looks gorgeous as well as the lovely terraced area perfect for the warmer weather.
We settled on making ourselves at home in the snug and joined a few other diners including a gorgeous chocolate Labrador who was very well behaved.
What did we think of the Rustic Afternoon Tea at St Mary’s Inn?
We started off with an Americano for my dad which he said was lovely and strong and the accompanying warm milk was a nice added touch.
My hot chocolate was delicious.
After perusing the menu we made our selection and relaxed.
After a short wait Sarah was back bringing over the impressive array of delicioustreats.
We started at the bottom and made our way up the delicious layers.
My dad plumped for the smoked salmon in a white stottie.
I opted for the cheese savoury also in a white stottie.
The sandwiches were delicious and generously stuffed with filling.
My dad thoroughly enjoyed the Ringtons English Breakfast Tea especially with the homemade tea cosy!
Next up we delved into the warm mince pies. The pasty was light and the meat was succulent and packed full of flavour. We ate every last crumb.
We decided to share the scones so we both got to try a cheese and fruit one.
Generously my dad let me have the tops (arguably the best bit).
The scones were crumbly and delicious.
For the fruit scone we both opted for generous lashings of jam followed by cream – how do you have yours?
We saved the warm chocolate brownie till last and it was moist and a real treat for sweet toothed fans.
The service was excellent at St Mary’s Inn, I definitely couldn’t fault the staff.
We were made to feel so welcome and my dad is already making plans to bring my mam.
The food menu looks like there’s something for everyone and they also have live music on Friday evenings and special entertainment nights too.
I’m sure we will be back again!
Rustic Afternoon Tea at St Mary’s Inn
The Rustic Afternoon Tea has only been on the menu since April 1 and is served Monday through Saturday 12pm – 4pm.
It’s hearty and generous: doorstop sandwiches with classic fillings on stottie or granary bread; chunky slices of classic cakes; wedges of savoury favourites; and scones and cream as big as your fist!
It costs £15 per person and you can add Prosecco for £5 per person.

Aw what a lovely way to spend some daddy daughter time! I like the seating, almost like rustic booth seats, and of course the fire is a lovely touch (I’d have wanted to sit right in front of that if it were on!) Sounds like you get a lovely experience with tasty drinks & plenty of nibbles for the price! 🙂

This is a really good twist on an afternoon tea. I liked the look of the sandwiches and they seemed much more substantial than you would normally receive.
