Peter Pan & Wendy – review (AD)
We were kindly invited to watch Peter Pan & Wendy at the Gala Durham*.
This was our first visit to the Gala Durham theatre.
Elsie was very excited for a girls only day out including riding the park and ride bus into Durham and having lunch at Tango followed by a mooch around the market and an ice lolly.
And then onto Gala Durham for Peter Pan & Wendy.
With our tickets collected from the box office we got our drinks a blackcurrant juice for Elsie and a red slush for me and headed to our seats.
Elsie nabbed a blue booster to make sure she had a good view.
Peter Pan & Wendy synopsis
Wendy is 13 and fed up of EVERYTHING.
All she wants is an adventure, so when she finds herself lost in a magical enchanted forest, and meets a magical boy called Peter and a beautiful fairy called Tinker Bell, she is so excited.
Together a real adventure begins, with pirates and the dastardly Captain Hook after them – but Wendy soon realises that what’s really important might be waiting back at home…
From the producers of Alice In Wonderland and Cinderella, come fly with us in Gala Durham’s twist inspired by J.M. Barrie’s classic tale.
Recommended age: 5+
Accessible performances of Peter Pan & Wendy include a BSL (British Sign Language) interpreted and captioned performance on Friday 26 July, 6.30pm.

What did we think of Peter Pan & Wendy?
Peter Pan & Wendy brings together all the favourite characters from the original story just with a modern twist!
I loved that the cast were North East natives and they delivered exceptional performances, bringing both energy and depth to their characters.
The actor portraying Peter Pan embodied the mischievous and carefree spirit of the boy who never grows up, while Wendy’s character was portrayed with a perfect blend of curiosity and maturity.
Captain Hook, with his menacing presence and comedic timing, provided a perfect foil to Peter Pan’s heroics. He was very Russel Brandesq but had the audience eating out of the palm of his sparkly cuffed hands.
The flying sequences were a highlight, executed with precision and adding a touch of real magic to the performance.
Elsie loved the audience participation particularly clapping to save a fairy’s life and when Hook and his pirate gang were trying to recruit newbies.
The singing and dancing, the different elements of the stage and lighting all really helped to transport us to Neverland and keep even the youngest audience members captivated.
During the 20 minute interval we had a loo break and stocked up on more sweets from the bar.
Elsie really enjoyed herself and said she would definitely come back to the Gala Durham for another show!
Peter Pan & Wendy at Gala Durham was a thoroughly enjoyable production that stayed true to the spirit of the original story while offering a fresh and modern perspective.
It was a visually stunning and emotionally resonant show that left the audience with a sense of wonder and a reminder of the joys of imagination and adventure.
This production is a must-see for anyone looking to experience a classic tale brought to life with creativity and passion.
There’s lots of laughs for little ones and plenty of important messages for bigger ones – like the importance of friendship and looking after our planet.
There’s still time to take a trip to Neverland Peter Pan & Wendy is running until Saturday 27 July.
