Online Adventure Babies session – review (AD)
Elsie and I enjoyed an online Adventure Babies session during lockdown which was kindly gifted to us in exchange for an honest review*.
Back in October last year Elsie had her first Adventure Babies session at Ouseburn which we attended with my mam and loved.
Because of lockdown the usual Adventure Babies sessions have had to pause but the fun hasn’t had to stop – sessions are being beamed directly to you in your home thanks to Zoom.
The day before our session we were emailed the relevant information – what book we’d be enjoying, what props we could gather beforehand to use during the session; as well as some messy play ideas to do afterwards inspired by the story.
In a separate email our Zoom meeting invite details were included.
All I had to do was download the free Zoom app onto my iPad and create an account in advance and we were good to go on Friday morning.
I gathered up the props as best I could with what we had in the house. I made our own caterpillar using one of Steve’s old football socks and several pairs of my own socks and fortunately we had a lot of animals in toy form already.
About five minutes before our session started I set us up on the living room floor with our props and dialled into the meeting.
We started the session as they always do with a warm welcome and introductions and then one by one we took turns to talk about our week, what we’ve been up to and how we’ve been feeling.
This is a great way to connect with the others in the session and also a chance for us mammies to have a chat with mum’s in the same position.
Maternity leave can be quite lonely and isolating as it is without lockdown!
After the introductions we sang Old Macdonald and then it was story time.
This week’s story was Pig’s Egg, so the theme of the session was all about farm yard animals.

After the story we were given some farm yard inspired messy play ideas such as:
- Washing up bowl or large bowl with cereal in – cheerios/ crushed up Weetabix/Shreddies/Rice Krispies – all make great farmyard dry messy play – just add some farm animals or chicks and your little ones will have a great time. You could use Weetabix for the fences. Put a blanket down underneath which you can scoop up afterwards and shake outside when you have finished.
- Plastic eggs – just fill a bowl with as many as you have. If you have toy eggs that open, put things inside to make some shakers and if you have older children hide them around the room for them to find! You can also do a good egg hunt in the garden.
- Washing up bowl or large bowl with water in and add bath ducks or get them in the bath with ducks – you can continue singing 5 little ducks in the water.
- Feathers – You probably don’t have loads of feathers at home but if you happen to have a feather boa – this is a great item to let your little ones have, they can feel the softness, you can tickle them and wrap it around them.
- Hay – put some hay in a tray with chicks, shaky eggs and bunny ears – if you happen to have any hay you could give them a little bit of hay as it’s an unusual texture
- Cotton wool – let your little one play with some cotton wool, can they can feel the soft sensation on their feet and cheeks? Can they squeeze it in their hands?

It’s a family-run and family friendly cafe within walking distance on Goldspink Lane. They offer plant-based, locally-sourced food, drinks and cakes. They also have a comfy area for little ones to play in too.

This is sooo cool! It’s great that she still gets to experience the session, even within your own home.
p.s. she is such a little cutie!
Someone put some good thought and creativity into moving that adventure online! I think the community aspect among moms is highly important.
I love the variety of activities you do with her. It’s so fun!
