Elsie’s first birthday celebrations

Elsie’s first birthday celebrations

5th August 2020 4 By Rachael Stray

We celebrated Elsie’s first birthday during eased lockdown and despite our little girl being a poorly little poppet she still had a really lovely day.

Thankfully Boris had decided to ease lockdown restrictions which meant my family and Steve’s parents could join in the celebrations.

We hadn’t seen Steve’s parents since New Year’s Day so they stayed with us just for one night – maintaining social distancing.

Elsie hadn’t seen my family since early March (bar video chats) so it meant so much to us that they could come (albeit it to the garden) to join in her special day.

We decided to host a BBQ so we could social distance properly with Steve’s dad manning the grill and Steve and I covering the kitchen and drinks.

It was low key but really lovely.

We were worried she might be a bit overwhelmed with being poorly and not being used to having so many people round her but she took it all in her stride.

Elsie enjoyed opening her presents and even managed a go on her new swing!

She enjoyed her first BBQ impressing everyone with her good appetite.

My mam managed to eventually hunt down a first birthday balloon and we had bunting and balloons and of course a gorgeous cake.

We didn’t make the cake, a very talented local baker matched our brief to a tee and Elsie tried cake for the first time and it was definitely a hit!

We didn’t go overboard with gifts, we’d been buying and putting presents away since she was a few months old and everything we bought was on offer.

She was really spoilt by everyone she practically has a new wardrobe with all of her new outfits as well as lots of new books and a beautiful bookcase to house them.

Once she’s able to walk I’m sure she’ll be running round the house with her gorgeous wooden pram from auntie Emma and uncle James.

I’m worried that Elsie might now associate seeing people with getting presents as my two besties popped round the week after her birthday for a catch up in the garden also bearing gifts.

Elsie’s first birthday celebrations might not have been what we would have planned if the current situation was different but nonetheless we made the best of it and she seemed to enjoy herself which is all that matters.
