Celebrating my first Mother’s Day

Celebrating my first Mother’s Day

25th March 2020 2 By Rachael Stray

Although it wasn’t quite how we imagined it I still had a lovely time celebrating my first Mother’s Day.

Elsie even managed to stay in her cot a little longer so we had some extra much-needed sleep so that was a nice start to the day.

If we weren’t social distancing because of corona virus I’m sure we would’ve had a lovely day out, probably at the coast and met up with my mam and nanna.

Instead, I drove by myself to my mam’s to drop off her presents and pick up a few essentials they managed to buy for us (loo roll, baby formula and anti-bacterial wipes) as well as some Easter treats too.

We kept a good 2 metres between us as they stood in the hallway and me half way down the drive.

I’m lucky I managed to wish my mam a happy Mother’s Day in person and watch her opening her gifts (albeit from a distance) but I know so many other people weren’t so fortunate this year.

Of course we would’ve loved to celebrate together but I have asthma, my parents work for the NHS and my nanna is high risk because of her COPD so it quite frankly was not worth the risk.

So mam will drop off my card and present to my nanna when she goes to do her food shop next week.

My nanna is self-isolating and quite frightened by the pandemic. I’m giving her a regular call and text so she can still keep in touch with us.

Once safely back in my car and my hands smothered in anti-bacterial gel I headed home to my little family where Steve made us both a fried egg and bacon sandwich for lunch.

After this it was present opening time!

My card from Moonpig hadn’t arrived yet so Steve had bought me a back-up card from Tesco.

I also got a lovely bunch of flowers, a big bar of my favourite Cadbury Dairy Milk and matching mammy and baby bear sweatshirts for Elsie and I.

After lunch we headed out for some fresh air and we headed to the nearby Derwent Walk – we were sensible and stayed well away from other people but when we did see others everyone was smiley and cheerful which was nice to see.

So many people in our village have put pictures of rainbows in their windows which I’m sure the kids are enjoying spotting these.

Before we had our tea we gave Steve’s mam a call using our Facebook Portal so we could see each other. We bought his parents one for Christmas and then using our Christmas money from them we bought one for us to use.

For us it’s better than just Facetime because we’re handsfree and it’s on the TV so Elsie can see people clearly and they can see her as she’s playing and it follows you round the room which I’m sure will be a handy feature when she’s on the move!

Steve has arranged for a take out Afternoon Tea for his parents to share next weekend and Elsie’s card and gift we posted directly to her from the websites.

So although it wasn’t the Mother’s Day celebrations we had in mind I still had a lovely day and I’m hoping that we can all get together soon for belated fun when everything calms down and it is safe to do so.
