Aldermans Coffee House – review
Before we went to watch The Keeper we headed to Aldermans Coffee House for a light lunch.
With Bank Holiday Monday being wet and miserable we didn’t want to venture too far from the Customs House for lunch.
You can see our thoughts on The Keeper here.
There’s free parking at the Customs House which is right next to the docks on the Tyne.
I only really know Ocean Road and I’m not too familiar with South Shields so I just searched for somewhere to eat within walking distance.
Aldermans Coffee House is less than 10 minutes walk away from the Customs House which was ideal.

What did we think of Aldermans Coffee House?
At a guess I’d say this used to be a pub in a former life. The inside feels cosy and inviting.
Staff were friendly and welcoming from the moment we stepped inside.
There’s quite a good menu and a daily specials board to choose from; as well as lots of lovely cakes on display too.
Steve plumped for the bacon and mushroom panini with wedges from the main menu. I opted for the crispy chicken and mayo wrap with salad and cubed potatoes from the specials board.
For drinks Steve decided to have a soft drink while I needed to be warmed up, so a hot chocolate with cream and a crumbled flake was my choice of drink.
This was my treat as part of Steve’s birthday but unfortunately I was caught short – they don’t take card payments so hubby dearest saved the day with a £20 note.
With orders placed and paid for we sat back down.
Our drinks soon arrived and my hot chocolate really hit the spot.

It’s obvious this is somewhere locals like as many are on first name terms with the staff which is lovely.
After a short wait our food arrived.
My wrap was lovely and I polished the lot.

Unfortunately Steve’s panini had butter inside although we had requested it without so he just ate what he could scraping off the butter.

As we were pushed for time we didn’t make a fuss but he was disappointed. I had offered to swap him my meal but he said no.
Ordinarily we would’ve asked for another as I think this was just an honest mistake but with a film to catch we didn’t have time to wait.
I really enjoyed my food and was just disappointed Steve wasn’t able to fully enjoy his.
Aldermans has a nice atmosphere and the prices are really reasonable too; our total bill was £16.25. I’m sure if we’re back over in South Shields we would return.

I always ask for sandwiches and similar without butter, I hate it when it still arrives with butter. Aside from that, it seems like a good location & well worth a visit. That hot chocolate looks yum! I wish places near me topped hot choc with a crumbled flake! Fab review, Rachael 🙂

Oh my, that hot chocolate looks amazing!! I love wraps too, I’d most definitely order the same! It’s a shame about the butter situation but overall it looks like a lovely place with nice food! Seeing all that food is reaaallly making me hungry hehe! Great post, thanks for sharing your review Rachael! <3 xx
