My overall thoughts on One Night on the Island
I am a romantic at heart and I knew from the synopsis alone that One Night of the Island was a book I would love and I was not disappointed.
Within just a few sittings I devoured One Night on the Island; as I was completely hooked.
I really identified with Cleo – she is an online journalist about to hit the big 30 and feels such a weight on her shoulders about doing something really significant to mark this birthday.
I’m a former journalist (now working in PR and communications) and I felt really similar about turning 30 although I did not do anything as outlandish as Cleo does!
Cleo’s editor has a bright idea to send her to a remote island, to marry herself, in a symbolic ceremony, as she turns 30 – still single.
Not 100% convinced she makes her maiden voyage to Salvation Island and after a rather bumpy passage she arrives, literally in the middle of nowhere, to find her cosy cottage double-booked.
And to her absolute horror the disgruntled, sticking his oar in American, Mack is her new roommate.
Photographer Mack has travelled from America to Salvation Island to find out more about his heritage, document the stories his grandmother told him and get some much-needed space and time to think – or so he thought!
What follows is a laugh out loud funny, but wholly poignant tale of how they end up forced to live with each other in Otter Lodge, and the quirky routines that they develop, including the three things they share with one another, the rules displayed in the kitchen and the infamous chalk line.
A colourful cast of characters support Cleo and Mack, as they navigate life in this unknown place which soon becomes incredibly meaningful to them both.
Salvation Island has a really close-knit community who embrace Cleo and Mack with open arms and add even more charm to the story.
I really felt like I was there with them both, clambering over “the mountain” to get some phone signal, joining in with the knitting, enjoying a pint of Guinness at the pub and taking in the incredible views the island has to offer; thanks to Silver’s brilliant writing.
The heartbreak that Cleo feels really hit me and the turmoil that Mack goes through just really pulls on your heartstrings.
Salvation Island really does become Cleo’s salvation.
I’m a big fan of films like The Holiday and books by Nicholas Sparks and if you are too, then One Night on the Island is a must-read.
This was the first book I have read by author Josie Silver but I doubt it will be my last, I really love her writing style and have heard such positive things about One Night in December.
