5 reasons to choose antique jewellery (AD)

Since the start of this year I’ve been making changes to be a more conscientious consumer; so, I thought I’d share my 5 reasons to choose antique jewellery.

I’m a big history fan and I love the idea of antique jewellery having its own past and story to tell, I’ve been lusting after a few gorgeous pieces on the Carus Jewellery website.

As someone who worked in retail for almost a decade, I’m falling out of love with fast fashion and really trying to adopt to the reduce, reuse, recycle movement and next on my list is tackling my jewellery box.

I would love to have a few key investment pieces of antique jewellery that I know will stand the test of time.

Avid readers know that I’ve been making changes to try to be a more conscientious consumer, I made the switch to reusable make-up remover pads, ditched sanitary products for period pants and stopped using bottled water.

History and Meaning

Antique jewellery, unlike new pieces comes with greater history and meaning. There’s a certain undeniable romance and honour in wearing a family heirloom – like your grandmother’s wedding ring.

While not everyone is lucky enough to be gifted an heirloom, buying antique jewellery is another way to connect yourself to history.

I’d love to know the history behind this Art Deco Aquamarine & Pearl Pendant necklace.

I think wearing a piece of antique jewellery is like a little thread that ties you to the past. I have some pieces of jewellery passed onto me and when I wear them, I feel more connected to that particular person.

And I think it’s a wonderful way to keep their memory alive.

Good Value and an Investment

Antique jewellery such as rings can be a better value for money purchase.

Prices for antique jewellery can be lower than new jewellery and as every item is unique, the resale opportunity is excellent; as its value won’t decrease in time.

Many antique pieces will actually increase in value as time goes by.

Unique designs

One of my favourite things about antique jewellery is the sheer breadth of styles and designs to be found and the amount of colour involved too.

For example, this seven stone sapphire ring is just stunning.

I love the twisted rope of 9ct white gold with the seven round cut sapphire gemstones nestled between.

Very old pieces were almost certainly custom and hand-made which means they have that unique wow factor.

After the introduction of methods of mass production, it was still common to find custom pieces, and pieces that incorporated highly skilled details such as hand-engraving.

And regardless of whether your piece was custom-made or not, you’re unlikely to come across someone else with the same one. We’ve all been to a wedding and wore the same dress as another guest and been gutted by it.

Because there are so many amazing periods, styles and designs to choose from with antique jewellery you’ll be sure to find something that suits your style that is as beautiful and unique as you are.

Timeless

Design trends are great fun but they come and go, what is the height of fashion one year isn’t the next which often leads to the many issues of fast fashion.

But when it comes to an investment piece – especially one you want to wear for the rest of your life like your wedding or engagement ring – there’s something to be said for a buying antique – a timeless choice.

Choosing an antique piece is a great way to have something that will stand the test of time.

Although modern trends often reference historical design, an antique piece will always have a different look and feel to its modern counterparts.

Even if the design was all the rage 100 years ago, a classic piece from any era will stand the test of time.

Sustainability

Being conscious of how our lifestyles impact the world around us has become more important to many of us in recent years, thanks to the likes of Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough.

It is inspiring to see the change a lot of us are trying to make and that should extend even into the smallest of things, like your jewellery box.

Buying antique jewellery means you are actively buying into an attempt to decrease waste. Buying something new requires significant resources to make and a production process that is likely to not be environmentally friendly.

Purchasing antique jewellery allows you to both support smaller and often local businesses and to be not only a consumer but an environmental conserver in the world of jewellery.
