Five Ways to Enjoy Autumn with the Family (And Take Care of Yourself Too!)

3rd November 2024 0 By Rachael Stray

As the days get shorter and the air turns crisp, autumn is the perfect season for family adventures and cosy evenings.

It’s also a great time to look after yourself, ensuring you stay refreshed and energised whether you’re a parent like me or not.

Here are five ways to make the most of autumn with the family, while also sneaking in some self-care.

1. Get Outdoors and Embrace the Season

Autumn’s natural beauty is reason enough to get outside with the family, friends or solo.

Take advantage of the crisp air and colourful landscapes by going for walks in your local park or woodlands.

Let the kids collect leaves, conkers, and pinecones while you all enjoy the fresh air.

And enjoy playing in the park when it isn’t too wet or windy!

Dressing in breathable layers is key to enjoying the ever-changing autumn weather.

Start with a warm base layer and add a thicker top layer like my maroon funnel neck sweatshirt which is brushed cotton and a waterproof jacket to stay comfortable.

2. Maximise Daylight Hours

As autumn progresses, the daylight hours shrink.

Make the most of the time before the early nights draw in by planning outdoor activities for the family.

Whether it’s a weekend walk, a family bike ride, or an impromptu trip to the playground, these daylight moments are precious.

We enjoyed a trip to the pleasure beach in Skegness before it closes for the winter and even on a crisp autumn day with the right clothing we were warm and had lots of fun!

Encouraging the family to get outside for a bit of fresh will help everyone feel energised and connected.

It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the last light before the longer, darker winter days arrive.

3. Create Cosy Evenings In

After a day outdoors, coming home to a cosy evening is a perfect way to unwind.

Gather the family, grab some blankets, and enjoy reading or watching a film together as the evening draws in.

Autumn is the ideal time to start a new book, either as a family or individually.

Whether you’re diving into a classic or discovering a new favourite, reading is a great way to slow down and relax after a busy day.

This balance of outdoor activity and indoor comfort can help everyone in the family feel refreshed.

4. Take Time for Self-Care

Looking after yourself is just as important as looking after the family.

Make some time for self-care, especially as the weather cools and the seasons change.

A little indulgence can go a long way in helping you feel rejuvenated.

Try a hair mask to nourish dry strands, and don’t forget to moisturise—especially your hands, which can easily become dry as temperatures drop.

Incorporating a good hand cream into your daily routine can make a world of difference.

Take care of your skin with rich, hydrating moisturisers and soothing face masks and enjoy the process as a little moment of calm in your day.

Filling your own cup ensures you’re in the best place and to be able to care for others.

5. Wrap Up Warm and Enjoy Simple Pleasures

Autumn invites us to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Whether it’s a family bonfire, an afternoon spent kicking through leaves, or a pumpkin-carving session, these moments don’t have to be elaborate to be memorable.

Remember to wrap up warm, as the temperature can change quickly and wear waterproofs!

I’ve invested in a good pair of leather boots, thermal socks and good coats like this purple waterproof full length raincoat and lovely thick warm scarlet red coat which is wind and waterproof perfect for when the temperatures drop further.

Add in cosy touches like scarves, hats, and mittens, and make the most of the season’s charm.

Autumn is a time to connect with nature, with your family, and with yourself—cherishing these simple joys can bring a sense of fulfilment.

Autumn offers endless opportunities for family fun, whether you’re exploring the outdoors or getting cosy at home.

But amidst the family adventures, don’t forget to prioritise your own self-care.

A little bit of pampering can go a long way in helping you feel refreshed and ready for anything.

By balancing time outdoors with relaxation, and making self-care a priority, you’ll be able to enjoy autumn with your family to the fullest.
