15 self-care tips for the winter

Taking care of yourself during the winter is essential to stay healthy and maintain a positive mindset so I thought I’d share my 15 self-care tips for the winter.

15 self-care tips for the winter:

  1. Stay warm:Dress in layers to protect yourself from the cold.
    • Use warm blankets and cosy clothing when indoors.
    • I’ve invested in thermal long-sleeved vests and leggings you can find these in most larger supermarkets and Marks and Spencer do some fab ones!
  2. Hydrate:Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as winter air can be dry.
    • I’m not a big fan of water so I’ve upped my juice intake.
    • I’ve also been enjoying hot chocolates with the Velvetiser that Steve kindly bought me for Christmas.
  3. Moisturise:Use a good-quality moisturiser to prevent dry skin, especially on your hands, face, and feet.
    • I have a hand cream by the bed to use before I go to sleep.
    • Applying foot cream and then wearing some fluffy or thermal socks helps to keep your feet warm and also hydrated.
    • I’m also trying to moisturise my body more during the winter as I’ve definitely noticed my skin feels drier.
  4. Protect your immune system:Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
    • Consider taking vitamin supplements.
    • Use hand santisier when out and about. I have one in my car door, in my hand bag and in the backpack we use when out and about with Elsie.
    • Wash your hands regularly with soap when possible.
  5. Exercise regularly:Try to stay active this helps to boost your mood, and maintain overall health.
    • I’ve been enjoying some free walking workouts on YouTube which take less than 20 minutes but gets me moving and feeling better.
    • Wrapping up warm and going for a walk for some Vitamin D, mindfulness and fresh air is something I need to do more often.
  6. Get enough sleep:Ensure you get sufficient rest to support your immune system and overall wellbeing.
  7. Practice good hygiene:Wash your hands regularly to prevent the spread of germs.
    • Take warm baths or showers to relax and cleanse your body.
    • Invest in hand santiser for when you’re out and about.
  8. Mindfulness and relaxation:Practice mindfulness meditation or deep breathing exercises to manage stress.
    • Consider activities like yoga or tai chi for both mental and physical wellbeing.
    • Use an app like HeadSpace to do guided meditations.
  9. Socialise:Connect with friends and family, whether in person or virtually.
    • Meet friends or family for a walk and get out in nature.
    • Meet up with friends or family indoors when the weather is too cold or wet.
  10. Light therapy:If you experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), consider using a light therapy box to simulate natural sunlight exposure.
  11. Be prepared: Keep yourself updated on weather conditions to plan and prepare.
    • We’ve been battered by numerous storms already this year so I always make sure to check the weather forecast before making any plans.
  12. Stay positive:Focus on the positive aspects of winter, such as the beauty of snowfall or the opportunity to enjoy seasonal activities like light trails.
  13. Healthy comfort foods:Enjoy nourishing, warm meals with a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  14. Regular health check-ups:Schedule routine health check-ups to address any potential issues before they become more serious.
  15. Get cosy and read: I find curling up on the sofa under a blanket with a good book the perfect tonic to cold wintry days. If reading isn’t for you curl up and enjoy watching your favourite tv show or film.

Remember, self-care is a personal journey, so tailor these tips to fit your individual needs and preferences.

Listen to your body and prioritise the things you think will contribute to your overall wellbeing during the winter months.
