Brinkburn Street Brewery, Bar & Kitchen – review

Brinkburn Street Brewery, Bar & Kitchen – review

31st July 2022 0 By Rachael Stray

We enjoyed our first visit to Brinkburn Street Brewery, Bar & Kitchen in Byker for food, so thought I’d share our honest review.

To celebrate Steve’s birthday we decided to have a meal just the two of us the day after, following a busy weekend celebrating Elsie’s belated Christening.

After spending the morning catching up on a few things at home and then having a quick trip to the Metro Centre, we headed to Brinkburn Street Brewery, Bar & Kitchen for some lunch.

Brinkburn Street Brewery, Bar & Kitchen

It is a small, independent brewery based in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with their own bar and kitchen, and events space.

Their mission is to spread the word about the wonders of local craft beer, to make friends, build a community and bring people together, everyone/everything being equal in the pub.
It is located on Ford Street, Ouseburn Valley, Byker and is open daily from 11am to 11pm.
The kitchen is open from 12-9pm Monday to Friday, 11am-10pm on a Saturday and 11am-6pm on a Sunday.
They offer a combination of Northeast-inspired small plates, main courses, cheese sharing boards, and desserts with all dishes prepared by their chefs using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Many of these dishes include their own beers as ingredients, brewed right on the premises.
And they also offer a range of American Street Food including burgers and pizzas.
The unique and quirky Maling Hall Events Space with a capacity of up to 250 is where they hold a wide range of events including ‘Big Pub’ Nights with resident and guest DJs every Friday and Saturday.
And the events space can also be rented out for private parties, weddings, and other events.

Our overall thoughts on Brinkburn Street Brewery, Bar & Kitchen

We managed to bag a parking space in the on street parking right outside which is free for two hours during the week.

There’s a real eclectic mix of pictures adorning the walls as you walk downstairs to the bar and kitchen.

It was really quiet when we dined in on a Monday lunchtime after the Easter break but it didn’t put us off.

We had our pick of tables and opted for one close to the windows with a view of the beer garden.

The menu seemed scaled back which we thought would be the case for a weekday lunchtime, however there was still plenty to choose from including starters and main courses.

A friendly waitress took our drinks order while we perused the menu, a coke for me and a lemonade for Steve.

For those wanting something alcoholic there’s a big range of beverages on offer with some even brewed on site.

When it came to ordering, Steve plumped for chicken tacos and I only had a burger on my mind, opting for the Brinkburn.

We both stuck with the double cooked chips rather than pimping them up.

The menu for the Sunday lunches was still on the chalkboard and it all sounded delicious – I would love to return for one!

After a short wait, our food was whisked over to us and we eagerly tucked in.

Steve had three packed tacos with spicy grilled chicken and a basket of chunky chips.

He said the beer-brined chicken breast was flavoursome and really moist and I absolutely agreed when I had my little taste!

My Brinkburn burger was medium as I’d requested and I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into it.

The meat was juicy and tender and the chips were really good. I thought the Byker Brown Ale pickled jam on top of the burger was really delicious.

The food was really good and the place has a cool industrial vibe.

I liked the mix matched chairs, and noticed some comfy looking leather sofas too.

I’m happy to report the toilets were clean.

Our total bill came to £27.06 which included a 10% service charge.

I’m not a fan of imposed service charge, which I only noticed after I’d paid when looking at the printed bill, I usually tip anyway but can understand that businesses are struggling due to the pandemic.

We both enjoyed our childfree lunch and we’d be happy to return to Brinkburn Street.

There’s lots of highchairs and a children’s Sunday lunch available so we’d maybe take Elsie with us.
