Breakfast at Riverview Bakery – review

To round off a fortnight of annual leave Steve and I decided to treat ourselves to breakfast at Riverview Bakery.

This was my first visit post-lockdown and after lovely refurbishment at Riverview Bakery – but it was Steve’s first visit.

After double checking they serve breakfast all day, we headed over with stomachs rumbling, not long after 11am.

It’s less than a ten minute drive to Riverview Bakery from our home in County Durham.

There’s limited free on street parking outside of Riverview Bakery; as well as a dedicated decent sized free car park at the rear which is well sign posted.

It was busy when we arrived but we were able to nab a table straight away, people who arrived after us had to wait a little while.

I really love the refurb – there’s more tables with better spacing between them, and additional outside seating too.

The wallpaper is really lovely and that huge l-shaped sofa looked very inviting!

Breakfast at Riverview Bakery

After perusing the menu, we decided it was definitely breakfast we were after.

Steve plumped for the ultimate breakfast (full English) and I opted for eggs Benedict with bacon.

To drink, Steve chose orange juice and I had a can of Coke – much to his horror.

You order your food and drinks at the counter and food is brought over to your table by the friendly staff.

The counter has freshly baked bread behind it and delicious looking cakes and pastries in the chiller, I had my eye on a few tasty treats!

Orders placed and drinks in hand, I grabbed some cutlery and napkins and joined Steve at our table in the corner.

After a really short wait while we chatted and people-watched our food was soon swiftly brought out to us and it looked absolutely delicious.

Unfortunately, Steve’s slice of toast came pre-buttered and he’s not a butter fan so I politely asked a member of staff for some plain toast which was soon brought out and was absolutely no problem.

Other than that one blip (we should have asked for plain toast) everything else was marvellous.

Steve’s ultimate breakfast certainly lived up to it’s name – fried egg, hash brown, two sausages, three rashers of thick crispy bacon, fried tomatoes, baked beans and a slice of toast.

My eggs Benedict – two poached eggs, several thick rashers of crispy bacon and lashings of that creamy sauce was served on a thick slice of homemade bread.

I also scored Steve’s surplus buttered slice of toast to mop up my plate with.

One of my eggs was slightly more done than I would’ve liked but the other was perfectly runny.

The bacon was definitely the right choice

You can have ham or bacon with the eggs Benedict and the bacon was absolutely delicious and just how I like it – a bit gnarly!

We both ate every morsel of food and it really set us up for the day. So much so that we weren’t even really hungry at tea time!

I paid another visit to the counter before we left and after much deliberation we decided we couldn’t possibly leave without a chocolate brownie to share (they are huge) and a bargain at £3.

My overall thoughts on Riverview Bakery

I really like Riverview Bakery, it has a cosy, welcoming vibe and a great varied menu which is very reasonably priced.

The fact that they serve breakfast all day is a winner in my eyes as so few places do and the menu definitely offers something for everyone.

The breakfast menu has all the usual suspects – English breakfast, breakfast bap, eggs Benedict, things on toast as well as some other welcome options such as eggs royale, French toast and croque monsieur; as well as American pancakes.

If you’re after brunch they offer six hash bowls all priced at £6.50 including a vegan choice.

The lunchtime options are varied from your standard jacket potatoes, salads and hot roast meat bap, to burgers, dirty wedges and giant Yorkshire Puddings.

Sandwiches are served with crisps and there’s a great selection of fillings and at £5.50 each is a great price.

When I last visited, Catherine and I both plumped for the philly cheese steak sandwich and it was delicious!

You can also enjoy Afternoon Tea and Sunday lunches too which judging by the pictures I see on their Facebook page also look delectable.

There’s much more seating both inside and out and the layout flows so much better now.

We will definitely return to Riverview Bakery and absolutely recommend it for breakfast or lunch!
