A Family Day Out at Bamburgh Walled Garden – review

A Family Day Out at Bamburgh Walled Garden – review

7th September 2025 0 By Rachael Stray

During our recent week away exploring the gorgeous Northumberland coast, we carved out half a day to visit Bamburgh Walled Garden.

Last year we’d had a little peek at the development when it was still underway, so this time we couldn’t wait to see it all finished – and it didn’t disappoint.

As soon as we arrived, Elsie made a beeline straight for the playground.

She loved every moment – climbing, sliding, bouncing on the see-saw and digging in the sand pit.

The playground is a really good size and has been well thought out.

Of course Elsie loved the sandpit area which has pulleys, buckets and chutes.

There’s plenty of seating around the edges too, which is ideal for parents and grandparents to sit back with a coffee while little ones play.

The gardens themselves are beautiful.

Everything is accessible for wheelchair users and pushchairs, which makes it such a welcoming and inclusive space.

I took a few minutes to enjoy a stroll through the labyrinth – a calming little moment of peace while Elsie and Steve were still busy playing.

Eventually, we managed to prise Elsie away from the playground with the promise of lunch.

We grabbed a table inside the Bamburgh Walled Garden Café and had a look through the menu.

The food arriving at nearby tables looked and smelled fantastic, so we were excited to try it for ourselves.

Elsie chose the children’s meal, which came with a sandwich and snacks.

She wasn’t a fan of the mousse, but that just meant I got to enjoy it after finishing my own lunch.

Steve went for the sausage roll, served warm with some gorgeous potatoes on the side (I may have pinched a couple – purely for research purposes, of course!).

I had the egg mayo sandwich, which was fresh, tasty and came with a salad and coleslaw. Simple but delicious.

The café has a lovely relaxed feel, and everything is freshly made with a real focus on local Northumbrian produce.

Whether you’re after a hearty breakfast, a lunchtime bite, or just coffee and cake, it’s the perfect spot to pause and refuel.

We rounded off our visit with another wander through the gardens, taking in the coastal-themed sensory garden, designed to stimulate the senses with colour, textures and scents.

It’s a wonderful idea – something that feels both fun and restorative.

Bamburgh Walled Garden really is a space for everyone: families, couples, or anyone looking for a quiet spot to unwind.

From the accessible paths to the imaginative playground and the mouth-watering café menu, it’s a brilliant addition to Northumberland’s attractions.

We had such a lovely time here and will definitely be back on our next trip to the coast.
