A Brilliant Day Out at Hopetown Darlington – review
My five-year-old daughter Elsie and I recently enjoyed a fantastic day out at Hopetown Darlington so I thought I’d share an honest review.
Hopetown Darlington is a new family favourite we’ll definitely be returning to.
Hopetown Darlington: Where Railway Heritage Inspires Future Innovation
Darlington changed the world as the birthplace of the modern railway.
Hopetown Darlington builds on that legacy, inspiring the innovators of the future by connecting them with the town’s pioneering past.
Located on the historic North Road Station site, the museum first opened in 1975 and has recently undergone a £35 million transformation, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Now a 7.5-acre visitor attraction, Hopetown combines classic railway exhibits with new, interactive experiences.
With a collection of more than 30,000 objects, Hopetown Darlington tells the story of the railway in the North East from 1825 onwards.
Owned and operated by Darlington Borough Council, it’s a place where history comes to life and future ideas are sparked.
A brilliant day out at Hopetown Darlington
We travelled from our home in County Durham, to Hopetown which took just under an hour.
Parking was simple – we used the nearest car park to Hopetown, which is completely flat with plenty of spaces.
At just £4 for the entire day, it’s excellent value, and the museum is only a very short, well-signposted walk away.
We had booked the Wagon Woods play area for the 11am slot (£5 for Elsie, free for me), so after checking in at reception and visiting the very clean, accessible toilets (which include self-contained units with sink and toilet), we took a quick look around to get our bearings.
Wagon Woods is an impressive play structure – full of opportunities for climbing, balancing, exploring and adventuring.
Elsie was initially quite nervous on the higher sections, but with a bit of encouragement she quickly found her confidence.
Within 20 minutes she was zooming around on her own while I cheered her on from below – even braving the zip line for the first time!
It was lovely to see her grow in confidence and independence while having so much fun.
After well over an hour of non-stop play, it was almost 1pm.
We headed to the on-site café, but unfortunately the children’s meals had been mostly cleared out by then and there wasn’t anything Elsie fancied.
So, we decided to walk the short distance (about half a mile) into Darlington town centre, grabbed some lunch from Greggs, and walked back.
There’s lots of outdoor seating at Hopetown, and we sat enjoying our lunch while real trains passed by – a lovely little moment.
After lunch, we explored the indoor parts of the museum.
Elsie loved the interactive exhibits and we both enjoyed the creative areas, including colouring and building with blocks.
It’s a really hands-on experience and great for curious kids.
Before heading home, we treated ourselves to some delicious ice cream and had a little rest after a very full day.
On the grassy areas they even had outdoor games for you to play for free.
And dotted around were these little water paws and refresh stations for your dog.
By 4pm it was time to leave and make a quick detour to Durham for errands, but we left Hopetown with big smiles and happy memories.
Final thoughts:
Hopetown Darlington is a brilliant day out for families.
It’s fun, educational, and very accessible, with thoughtful facilities and activities for all ages.
You can easily tailor the cost depending on your budget – pack a picnic, or treat yourselves at the café, and entry to the main site is free.
We’re already looking forward to our next visit!
